Rain wipes three second-round games out

There was no waiting to the last minute on the decisions.

Gwinnett's four baseball teams scheduled to play Game 3 matchups on Thursday were notified early that their second-round playoff games were postponed until today. All four knew by early afternoon Thursday that the constant rain showers were going to make that evening's games impossible. That certainly beats showing up at the ballpark at night and hoping for a break in the rain that may never come.

Better weather is expected today for three local Game 3s - Brookwood hosts Norcross and Mill Creek hosts Walton in Class AAAAA and Providence Christian travels to Bremen in A.

"I don't know if it hurts us in any way," Providence coach Adam Cantrell said of the day off. "We get another day to work on some things. We didn't play our best baseball (Wednesday), we had some errors, so we'll try to work some things out."

The Stars play today at

5 p.m. at Bremen's Recreation Center. Providence won Game 1 of the series 7-6, but costly errors in Game 2 allowed Bremen to split Wednesday's doubleheader with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

"We need to hit like we did in the first game," Cantrell said. "We need to play better defense to back up the good pitching we got in both games."

The winner of today's game travels to play at Telfair County on Tuesday.

Brookwood defeated Norcross handily in Game 1 of their second-round series 9-0, but got blanked by Blue Devil pitcher Taylor Rakes in a 1-0 Game 2 victory.

The two teams will play Game 3 today at 7 p.m. at Brookwood.

The winner of Brookwood-Norcross must travel to East Coweta for Tuesday's quarterfinal series.

Mill Creek battled back after a 5-2 loss in Game 1 on Wednesday, winning the second game 7-5 to force Game 3 today. The Hawks' matchup with Walton is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

With a victory, Mill Creek gets another home series in the quarterfinals against Camden County. If Walton wins, the Raiders have to travel to Camden.
