|  | | 4/15/2008 12:01:00 AM | Email this article Print this article | Prep roundup: Providence girls golf wins region title KENNESAW - Providence won its second straight Region 6-A title on Monday and it wasn't even close. The Stars shot 174, hammering second place Galloway by 34 strokes.
"I think we have a real good chance to win state," Providence head coach Andy Randrup said. "Based on the previous scores historically at state. We have a real strong two (players)."
Those two were indeed strong on Monday. Lindsay Meredith won the individual region title. She shot an 86 on the par-72 course at the Marietta Country Club. Nicole Cosentino added an 88.
The Stars advance to the Class A State Championship on May 5th at The Lakes at Laura Walker in Waycross. Providence finished tied for fourth last year.
BOYS GOLF
Parkview knocks off Shiloh
SNELLVILLE - Parkview beat Shiloh 174-192 in a Region 8-AAAAA match on Monday at the County Club of Gwinnett. Michael Stolorena had the low round of the day. He shot a 39 to lead the Panthers. Ted Moon added a 45. Stephen and Greg Boike also shot 45s for the Generals.
Wesleyan takes 2nd in Heritage tourney
CONYERS - Wesleyan finished in second in an 11-team field in the Heritage Invitational at Honey Creek Country Club on Monday. The Wolves shot a 319, finishing 15 shots behind South Forsyth. Austin Day led Wesleyan with a 1-over par round of 73. He finished in second place, one shot behind the leader. Pat Steelman added a 79.
Hebron falls to Prince Avenue
BRASELTON - Hebron lost to Prince Avenue Christian 177-230 on Monday at Chateau Elan. Cole Maness led the Lions with a 53.
GIRLS TENNIS
Buford 3, Paideia 0
BUFORD - Buford swept Paideia 3-0 in the first round of the Region 6-AA tournament on Monday. The Wolves (13-6) picked up wins from the No. 1 doubles team of Whitney Holman and Cortland West. The No. 2 team of Jancy Burge and Michelle Hanley won their match, while Jordan Poole earned a point at No. 3 singles.
Buford plays Lovett in the second round Wednesday at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta.
BOYS TENNIS
Buford 3, Creekview 1
BUFORD - Buford knocked off Creekview 3-1 in the first round of the Region 6-AA tournament on Monday. Ben Hunter won the No. 1 singles match, while Preston Benson won at No. 2 for the Wolves (14-5). Ryan Speed and Matt Gates took care of the No. 1 doubles match.
Buford advances to play Holy Innocents' in the second round Wednesday at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta.
GIRLS SOCCER
Duluth 3, Central Gwinnett 1
DULUTH - Gwen Davis scored off an assist from Kristen Thompson about 12 minutes into the second half to lift Duluth past Central 3-1 on Monday at home.
Tylin Avila and Jessi Villar also scored for the Wildcats (5-9), while Emily Routh netted a goal for the Black Knights.
Collins Hill 2, Milton 1
ALPHARETTA - Alexa Jones scored the game winning goal with five seconds left in overtime as Collins Hill knocked off No. 5 Milton 2-1 on Monday. Jones scored after a nice pass from Alicia Plotky. She scored her first goal on a header with an assist from Kylie Donohue. Sage DoVale made nine saves for the Eagles (12-5). She had help in front from Katie O'Brien, Aubrey Tinklepaugh, Kelly Harriston, and Kristen Brooks.

Duluth 3, Central 1
DULUTH - Duluth overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat Central Gwinnett 3-1 on Monday. D.J. Rees scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Wildcats (10-6). Kevin Rodriguez and Jorge Torres also scored goals.
Collins Hill 4, Milton 0
ALPHARETTA - Collins Hill tied the school record for wins after beating Milton 4-0 in the regular season finale on Monday. Juan Hurtado scored twice to lead the Eagles (14-4). Ricardo Ortega and Kyle Hermansen also scored goals. Trey Taylor, Brady O'Brien, and Alejandro Duque each had one assist.
Jesse Garbowski and Taylor combined for the shutout. Garbowski finished with three saves, while Taylor had two.
Grayson 5, Union Grove 0
LOGANVILLE - Nick Weatherby had a hat trick as Grayson beat Union Grove 5-0 on Monday. Weatherby scored all three goals in the second half for the Rams (9-7-1). Russell Gaither and Brian Reulbach also scored. Andy Edwards and Mason Flynn combined to make two saves in the shutout.
BASEBALL
Parkview 3, Shiloh 2
SNELLVILLE - Tom Richardson drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh as Parkview knocked off Shiloh 3-2 on Monday. The Panthers (15-4, 4-1) came back after seeing Shiloh take a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the fifth. Kenny Bellavance and Brandon Jacobs each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Matt Foster scored the other run. Zach Cone also drove in a run on a sac fly. Beau Esmonde went 2-for-4.
Zach Olson (5-1) pitched six strong innings to get the win. He allowed two runs and two hits, while striking out nine. Cliff Carter pitched a scoreless seventh to get his sixth save.
Brookwood 11, Central 1
SNELLVILLE - Chase Hawkins won his eight straight decision as Brookwood beat Central Gwinnett 11-1 in five innings on Monday. Hawkins (8-0) allowed one unearned run and three hits over four innings. He also struck out four.
Seth Adkins hit a solo-homer, while going 2-for-2 to lead the Broncos (17-1, 5-0). Ross Heffley went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Ronnie Freeman drove in a run. Hawkins, Jon Robinson, and Jordan Erisman also had hits.
South 7, Berkmar 5
LILBURN - Sean Handlan struck out 10 batters and pitched a complete game as South Gwinnett beat Berkmar 7-5 on Monday. Handlan (3-2) earned the win, allowing three earned runs and four hits. He also had a hit of his own.
The Comets (8-10-1, 2-3) took a 5-0 lead, only to see Berkmar tie it with a four-run fifth. Kenny Sanderson changed that with a two-out double down the left-field line to plate Adam Finkenhoefer and give South the lead. Sanderson finished 3-for-4 with three runs. Aaron Jividen was also 3-for-4. He drove in two, scored once, and swiped two bases. Kyle Maloney hit a solo homer as part of a 2-for-4 game.
Jake Hendricks (0-4) allowed two earned runs over six innings but got the loss. Jarrett Rivera, Cody Jett, Kareem Hayes, and Mark Miller all drove in runs for the Patriots (4-14, 0-4).
Collins Hill 12, Duluth 0
DULUTH - Grant Earls pitched a one-hit shutout as Collins Hill beat Duluth 12-0 in five innings on Monday. Earls struck out six and allowed two walks to get the win. Curtis Guest went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead the Eagles (10-10, 6-4). Garritt Church went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Athens Academy 10, Hebron 2
ATHENS - Athens Academy knocked off Hebron 10-2 on Monday. David Reis drove in a run with a single. He also stole a base and got the loss on the mound for the Lions (11-5, 6-5). Reis' record is 0-2.
Salem 14, Dacula 4
CONYERS - Erik Schrum picked up his first loss as Salem knocked off Dacula 14-4 in five innings on Monday. Schrum (3-1) allowed seven runs and 14 hits in the loss. Tyler Jarvis went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Falcons (8-12, 7-11). Brad Mills walked twice and drove in a run, while Frankie Miller went 1-for-2.
Killian Hill 2, People's Baptist 1
McDONOUGH - Killian Hill clinched the region title with a 2-1 over People's Baptist Academy on Monday. Aaron Parks (6-0) pitched a complete game, striking out 12. He allowed three hits and an unearned run to get the win for Killian Hill (11-0, 8-0). Chase Williams drove in the first run in the fourth. After a 45 minute rain delay, Kyle Bailey drove in pinch-runner Clay Watson with a squeeze bunt in the seventh.
