|  | | 4/29/2008 12:01:00 AM | Email this article Print this article | Prep roundup: Dacula girls' history-making run continues DACULA - Dacula's unprecedented playoff run continues after beating Hillgrove 3-1 in the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament on Monday. The No. 2 doubles team of Paige Carver and Abby Crowe clinched the match for the Falcons (17-4) in the second tie-break set. The No. 1 duo of Holly Knight and Stephanie Weeden also won, while Caitlin Hosford took care of the No. 2 singles match. Maggie Bevil was up one set at No. 3 singles when Crowe and Carver clinched the match.
Dacula plays at Marist in the quarterfinals next week. It's the Falcons first trip to the Elite Eight in school history.
GIRLS TENNIS
GAC 5, Pepperell 0
LINDALE - Greater Atlanta Christian knocked off Pepperell 5-0 in the second round of the Class AA state tournament on Monday. Morgan Winston, Chelsea Sanders, and Rachel Gray swept the singles matches for the Spartans (15-4). Rebecca Gray and Jessica Tuggle locked up the No. 1 doubles match, while Brooke Lewis and Elizabeth McMurray earned a point at No. 2
GAC plays either Walker or Calhoun next week in the quarterfinals.
BOYS TENNIS
Wesleyan 3, Calhoun 0
CALHOUN - Wesleyan defeated Calhoun 3-0 on Monday in the second round of the Class AA playoffs to advance to the Elite Eight.
Norman Chang won at No. 1 singles while the doubles teams of Erik Trum and David Rodriguez and Colin Sylvester and Tyler Hediger were also victorious.
Wesleyan will play the winner of the Holy Innocents'-Adairsville match in the third round.
GAC 4, Marion Co. 1
BUENA VISTA - Greater Atlanta Christian beat Region 5-AA champion Marion County 4-1 in the second round of the state playoffs on Monday. Chad Day and Will Lewis gave the Spartans (17-2) wins in the first two singles matches. Kyle Walker and Jake Montgomery won at No 1 doubles, while Matt Maggart and Justin Lumsden earned a point at No. 2 doubles.
GAC gets either Darlington or Pace in the quarterfinals next week.
BASEBALL
South 3, Central 1
LAWRENCEVILLE - Sean Handlan was dominant on the mound as South Gwinnett beat Central Gwinnett 3-1 on Monday. Handlan (5-2) pitched a shutout for the Comets (11-12-1, 5-5). He struck out 11 and allowed three hits.
South scored all of its runs in the first inning. Kenny Sanderson, Lance Whatley, and Nick Blount each had a hit and an RBI.
Parkview 6, Grayson 3
LILBURN - Bronson Gagner hit three batters, but only gave up two runs in 61⁄3 innings as Parkview beat Grayson 6-3 on Monday. Gagner (4-2) struck out four and gave up four hits to get the win. Cliff Carter got the final two outs to earn his ninth save.
Zach Cone and Brandon Jacobs each went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored. Matt Foster (1-for-3) hit a two-run home run.
North Gwinnett 8, South Forsyth 7
CUMMING - Jim Moreland went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and a double to lead North Gwinnett in an 8-7 win over South Forsyth on Monday.
The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Bulldogs.
North Gwinnett (17-7, 10-5) scored five runs on four hits and four walks in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Nick Jones went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Ronnie Stewart (2-for-3) also drove in a run. Josh Wright (2-for-5) knocked in a pair.
Wyatt Brown (6-2) gave up six earned runs, but pitched 42⁄3 innings to get the win. Chad White pitched 21⁄3 innings of scoreless relief to get the save.
Collins Hill 8, Forsyth Central 3
SUWANEE - Collins Hill hit three homers, including two from Tommy Yeo, in an 8-3 win over Forsyth Central on Monday. Yeo finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs for the Eagles (12-13, 8-7). James Buckelew (2-for-3) drove in a run. Nick Squeglia struck out nine over five innings, but got a no-decision. Curtis Guest pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Brookwood 11, Berkmar 1
SNELLVILLE - Matt Adams struck out 10 batters in six innings to lead Brookwood to an 11-1 win over Berkmar in six innings on Monday. Adams (5-0) allowed an unearned run and two hits to get the win. Chase Hawkins went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer. Seth Adkins was also 2-for-2 for the Broncos (22-1, 10-0).
