Six days after the nation's top team survived a first-round scare against Alpharetta, Brookwood called upon its ace to help notch a 7-2 victory over Norcross and move into the Class AAAAA quarterfinals. University of Georgia-bound Chase Hawkins was more than happy to help out.
Working in relief, Hawkins escaped from a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning to preserve a one-run lead, then delivered a two-run double to key a four-run rally in the bottom half.
Matt Adams struck out eight and allowed one earned run in five innings to pick up the win for Brookwood (28-3), which travels to East Coweta on Tuesday.
Walton 8, Mill Creek 1: T.J. Kerins scattered five hits in a complete game, helping the Raiders advance to a Class AAAAA quarterfinal against Camden County. Daniel Ficarrotta, who had five RBIs in the three games, also homered.
North Cobb 4, Lassiter 3: Lucas Hart pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits, and the Warriors used two triples to eliminate the Trojans in Class AAAAA. North Cobb scored two in the first inning, a rally started by Jonathan Taylor's triple. In the fifth, Taylor singled and scored on Patrick Daugherty's triple, and Daugherty scored on Nick Fryman's groundout for a 4-3 lead.
Kell 15, South Forsyth 0: John Duran drove in four runs, and Matt Smith struck out five in a Class AAAAA game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule. Brandon Williams had a homer and three RBIs.
Salem 8, East Paulding 7: T.J. Cash's three-run home run in the seventh inning sent the Seminoles into the Class AAAA quarterfinals.
Loganville 19, Rome 9: Jacob Johnson hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and his two-run single in a seven-run sixth inning gave the Red Devils the 10-run lead necessary to end the Class AAAA game by the mercy rule.
Stephens County 16, Flowery Branch 0: Cody Martin hit a three-run homer and pitched two innings for the win in a merciful three innings in Class AAA.
Providence Christian 12, Bremen 4: Chris Wages, Jesse Meier and David Shealy each drove in three runs, and Jonathan Leverett struck out seven in four solid innings as the Stars (24-6-1) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. They'll visit Telfair County next.
Jefferson 13, Eagle's Landing Christian 3: Jake Fields went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs, Chris Swancey pitched five strong innings, and Jefferson (22-5) defeated Eagle's Landing Christian (22-9). Fields' second home run was his 18th, tying the single-season school record.
